Community safety is improved for everyone when we have a criminal justice system that treats everyone equally, whether immigrant, citizen, or visitor.
On Tuesday morning, immigrant rights groups delivered a letter to the Democratic National Committee and Democratic candidates denouncing the party’s refusal to discuss immigration in previous debates and calling on candidates to “detail with far greater emphasis how they will confront and overcome the unrestrained xenophobia and domestic human rights crisis unleashed by Donald Trump.”
New Jersey community and faith organizations are holding an emergency vigil at 10:00 AM on Sunday February 9th, 2020, in support of Gaspar Avendaño Hernandez, stepfather of ICE shooting victim, held at New Jersey’s Hudson County Jail.
This victory strikes at the core of the S-COMM program and supports jurisdictions from New York to Seattle to LA seeking to kick ICE completely out of our criminal justice system.
Trump and ICE have again shown why we are right to kick ICE out of New York. Another racist stunt, another reckless shooting – two more reasons why hundreds of cities have decided they are safer without ICE in their communities.
We welcome Trump’s announcement that he will bring attention to his failed war on sanctuary cities. It only makes the case stronger for localities across the country.
Another day, another effort by the Trump administration to demonize immigrants. But their desperate efforts only demonstrate that they are losing their war on immigrants when we champion our civil and human rights. We will not be silent while these anti-immigrant sheriffs side with hate, against our neighbors and loved ones.
On Tuesday morning, immigrant rights groups unveiled the Migrant Justice Platform, a unity blueprint for executive and legislative actions on immigration from grassroots voices nationwide. The Migrant Justice Platform presents a vision and principles to depart from the failed “comprehensive immigration reform” strategy of previous administrations and calls for concrete actions in three thematic areas: at home, on the southern border, and abroad.
Any platform that fails to de-conflict US labor and immigration policy is insufficient; and by this measure, Sanders’ proposal clears the bar. However, it remains to be seen whether he will foreground this excellent aspect of his immigrant rights plan on the campaign trail.
The irony of today’s disgraceful press conference is that it reveals that Trump is on the losing side of history, both in court and in the court of public opinion. The more Trump calls immigrants criminals, the more he will propel a growing, bottom-up national consensus that ICE and white supremacy must be expelled from police stations and sheriffs departments in order to truly secure our communities.
