On Tuesday, day laborers led a caravan of cars filled with migrant workers around the California state government building to call on Governor Gavin Newsom and other lawmakers to ensure that all immigrant families are included in all state Covid-19 relief efforts. No exceptions.
In response to House passage of the Senate’s coronavirus stimulus legislation (still pending signature by Donald Trump), the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) reaffirmed its calls for a worker migrant justice plan to ensure undocumented workers and families are not excluded in coronavirus response and called on local and state leaders to ensure they don’t replicate the same exclusions as in the federal bill.
We welcome that Democrats finally discussed immigration, and we welcome Biden’s continued evolution. Now it’s time for Biden to join the resistance to Trump’s war on sanctuary cities. Today, hundreds of localities serve as a critical bulwark in the resistance against creeping fascism. Biden will have plenty of opportunities to show his commitment in the months ahead.

In November 2019, a group of workers, represented by Legal Aid at Work, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network and Wage Justice Center, filed mechanic’s liens for claimed wages earned for work performed at Chapman Court, a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument located in Koreatown, Los Angeles.
In response to the news that the Second Circuit reversed an injunction preventing the Justice Department withholding funding from New York City and seven states in retaliation for their sanctuary policies on immigration, Chris Newman of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network issued the following statement:
There’s no avoiding the conclusion that there is a conspiracy of silence when it comes to the absence of Democratic debate about immigration. Big mistake. The future of US democracy is at stake if one of these people can’t prove that s/he can beat Trump on this issue.

On Tuesday morning, immigrant rights groups delivered a letter to the Democratic National Committee and Democratic candidates denouncing the party’s refusal to discuss immigration in previous debates and calling on candidates to “detail with far greater emphasis how they will confront and overcome the unrestrained xenophobia and domestic human rights crisis unleashed by Donald Trump.”
