Jerry Brown has signed a bill that prohibits local law enforcement agencies from detaining people for deportation if they are arrested for a minor crime and otherwise eligible to be released from custody. Assembly Bill 4, also known as the “TRUST Act,” was designed to counteract an Immigration and Customs Enforcement program that critics of the program say has led to nearly 100,000 Californians classified as “dangerous criminals.” AB 4 aims to give illegal immigrants in California “protection from overzealous immigration enforcement,” according to a statement from a spokesperson for the bill’s sponsor, Assemblymember Tom Ammiano, D-San Francisco.
