NDLON Reaction to District Court Order Enjoining President Trump’s plan to defund “Sanctuary” jurisdictions.

Los Angeles – On Tuesday, Judge William H. Orrick issued an injunction blocking President Donald Trump’s threatened plan to take federal funding away from so-called sanctuary cities. Judge Orrick ruled, “[Trump’s] Order cannot constitutionally place new conditions on federal funds.”

In response, Pablo Alvarado, Director of NDLON issued the following statement:

“Today’s decision is vindication for those who are resisting President Trump’s white supremacist agenda.  Local governments don’t just have a legal right to fight back, they have a moral obligation to protect people most under attack.

“To be clear, President Trump and Attorney General Sessions will continue their efforts to coerce and bully localities, especially those that take a stand for the values we most cherish, but they will only succeed if we let them.  Our responsibility is to protect our communities and to defend bedrock Constitutional rights.

“While we salute Judge Orrick’s decision, we cannot be complacent and rely exclusively on the courts. This moment must embolden all of us. No one should sacrifice their rights. And our political leaders must step into the fight against Trump’s racist agenda in defiance of his attempts to instill fear and terror in our communities. When the President is a conduit for white supremacy, local and state government must represent the people.”
