On Wednesday, December 18, 2024, immigrants in multiple cities across the U.S., will participate in a “international day of action and solidarity with migrants.” As the incoming Trump administration advances its threats of mass deportations, immigrant committees and worker centers are convening actions big and small to unify immigrant communities, local and national partners.
In the lead up to the December 18 mobilizations, NDLON released the following statement from Co-Executive Director Pablo Alvarado:
“Our adversaries wish and expect our immigrant communities to disappear in the silence of the night. That is because they know nothing of our courage. But we know of the courage in our communities.
“They want to instill fear in us, with their extremist rhetoric and policies. But all they will do is fan the flames of our indignation. And we will turn this indignation into action.
“Their incendiary rhetoric seeks to humiliate us, to stigmatize, to silence us. But our dignity is stronger than any hateful rhetoric or worldview.
“We will peacefully resist, with no hate in our hearts, but with a love for our migrant people. And even love for those who seek to destroy our families.
“Our fight is not for dignity. Because we already have enough of that, in abundance. Our fight is for respect and equality.
“Both friends and adversaries benefit from our labor, but you don’t want to accept our humanity. Our fight is ultimately to remind you of this: if you take our labor, you must respect our rights. You must accept our humanity. And if you ignore it, we will make you see it.
