LOS ANGELES, July 16 — Today the Mexican consul general in Los Angeles, Carlos González Gutiérrez, released a report on a survey of 330 immigrants from Mexico abducted by the Trump Administration between June 6 and July 6. The report is based on interviews with the Mexican citizens being held in federal detention in downtown L.A.

To nobody’s surprise, the survey reveals that “the vast majority are hardworking individuals who have contributed to the economy of Southern California for years,” the consul said in a statement.

According to the survey:

  • More than half of detainees (52%) have lived in the U.S. for at least a decade, and a third (36%) have been here for more than 20 years.

  • One third (31%) have children born in the United States.

And they work in a variety of industries, including:

  • Car washing – 16.4%

  • Construction – 13.3%

  • Factory workers – 13%

  • Landscaping – 11.5%

The following is a statement from Pablo Alvarado, Co-Executive Director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON):

“There is no hiding the truth about the hardworking immigrants who are being hunted, chased and locked away by this Administration. They are not the ‘worst of the worst,’ as the administration dishonestly calls them. They are the best of the best. Their hard work supports their families, this country and, through remittances, the country of their birth.

“The Mexican Government’s survey reminds us that immigrants are precious assets, not threats. What is true in L.A. is true across the United States: Immigrants are the backbone, heart and soul of our cities, communities and country.

“Stop attacking these workers and their families. Stop treating them as criminals. Stop destroying their lives.

“Dehumanizing, brutal attacks on immigrants only end up dehumanizing the attackers. A country that senselessly harms so many of its best and most productive members has lost its way.

“Only by peacefully resisting this madness will we help this country find its way back to humanity and justice. We the people are fighting to save one another — and we will win. Solo el pueblo salva al pueblo.”
