“There is a growing consensus ICE should be kicked out of Los Angeles entirely, not invited back into its jails.

In the past, Los Angeles Sheriff Department collusion with ICE resulted in constitutional rights violations, costing county residents millions of dollars following federal litigation. Moreover, public safety was undermined as immigrant communities refrained from reporting crime.

Thankfully, California’s existing sanctuary legislation—though not as comprehensive as Illinois’s—provides critical safeguards and will help prevent further damage to county residents if the Sheriff insists on trying to take the county backwards.”

— Chris Newman, Legal Director, National Day Laborer Organizing Network

The National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) calls on county officials to enforce the law, end all collaboration with ICE, and ensure that immigrant communities are protected from unjust detention and deportation. Los Angeles must not return to failed and unlawful practices that harm families and erode public trust.
