Los Angeles, CA – The following is a statement from Pablo Alvarado, Co- Director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON):
“Today we saw our US Senator Alex Padilla grabbed, tackled, and handcuffed by federal agents while he was trying to speak to DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. This was only the Trump Administration’s latest disgraceful, shameless, lawless act of brutality and violence – now against one of our highest-ranking elected officials.
“This unjust attack on Senator Padilla is also an attack against all the people he represents, especially the immigrant communities who have been suffering the most under the Administration’s lawless onslaught of aggression and terror.
“The people must not and will not stand for this. We at NDLON call on all Californians who are able to immediately come out to join immigrants to peacefully and non-violently condemn these abuses. We are asking people of good conscience, people who believe that immigrants are at the heart of our communities and country, to come out peacefully and denounce the violence, and defend and protect those most vulnerable to attack.
We are people of peace and love. Love is what moves us to defend our families, our communities and ourselves. Love, not violence. While we share in the fear and anger felt by many, we oppose and condemn violence in all its forms. We shun and reject all who act violently and who injure others. It is very clear at this point theTrump Administration is seeking to provoke violence as a justification for authoritarianism.
When agents and officers with military weapons storm into our community to seize immigrants — we condemn their violence. When gunmen in masks terrify children and parents and tear families apart — we condemn their violence. When outsiders, either civilians or police or other uninvited agitators, create chaos and violently attack people and damage property — we condemn their violence.
And when the Administration attacks and brutalizes our elected leaders simply for doing their job of standing up for us – we condemn their violence.
And we will do everything in our power to stop it.”
WHO: Everyone.
WHAT: Non-violent street protests to denounce the attacks on immigrants and Senator Padilla and to get ICE OUT OF OUR COMMUNITIES.
