Day Laborer Network Issues Statement on CA Values Act

Los Angeles— On Wednesday, California Senate Pro Tem Kevin De León (D- Los Angeles) introduced SB 54, the California Values Act which would “prevent the use of state and local public resources to aid federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in deportation actions.”

In response, Pablo Alvarado, Director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network issued the following statement:

“The introduction of the California Values Act by Senate Pro Tem Kevin de León sends a clear signal that our state won’t be infected by the paralyzing culture of suspicion that has taken hold of national politics.  For too long, an absence of leadership in Washington DC has created a vacuum that has been filled by scapegoating rhetoric and criminalizing policies that divide and endanger local communities.

“When signed into law, the California Values Act will ensure a clear statewide standard that appropriately respects the rights of all residents.”
