LOS ANGELES, March 30 — The White House border czar, Tom Homan, made another round of Sunday talk show appearances yesterday. As always, his remarks were fact-deprived, dishonest and inflammatory.
The following is a statement from Chris Newman, Legal Director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON):
“The news media call Tom Homan ‘immigration czar,’ a title invented out of thin air by right wing media during the Biden administration that hides what Tom Homan really is: a dangerous buffoon and a mouthpiece for the Trump Administration’s lies and Stephen Miller’s schemes.
“Homan should not be platformed, period. But if talking heads insist on giving him a platform, they should at least ask useful questions:
“Where’s the $50,000? What happened to the bills in a paper bag you allegedly took, according to news reports about an FBI bribery investigation? The White House shut down the probe and defended you — but where’s the money? You seem upset that DHS agents are working without pay — have you considered giving them your loose Benjamins?
“What do you mean, ‘Czar’? You keep saying that you and your masked goons in ICE and Border Patrol are “following the law.” You also keep saying, “If you don’t like the law, change it.” Tell us: Where in law is a “border czar” mentioned? Where are its powers delineated?
“Who’s really calling the shots on immigration? If you’re the “czar” and Stephen Miller is just “deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security advisor,” then you tell him what to do, right? Or does he give the orders? Are you the Czar who makes immigration policy or just a flunky who talks about it on TV? Show us the White House org chart, please.
“Did you know that ICE Director Todd Lyons has been having panic attacks? Did you contribute to them?
“What part of ‘due process’ don’t you understand? In other words, what amount of reasonable suspicion or probable cause must exist for ICE to ask a police officer or sheriff to hold an immigrant before a transfer? This is the center of the sanctuary city fight, which you talk about repeatedly. So what level of due process is afforded to someone who is being held by local cops for ICE? Can you clear that up here and now?”And ICYMI, Chris Newman appeared on The New Republic’s podcast, “The Daily Blast,” today to discuss recent news related to the Trump administration immigration cabinet.
