Unlawful Click and Arrest Tactic at the Heart of ICE’s Secure Communities Dragnet on Trial

After years of constitutional violations committed by ICE, this week, ICE’s deportation dragnet itself is on trial. Gonzalez v. ICE, a landmark class-action lawsuit, began a three-week trial this Tuesday (05/07/2019) in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles. The lawsuit challenges U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE’s) unconstitutional practice of asking local law enforcement to incarcerate individuals based on nothing more than incomplete and error-ridden database information.

On Monday, Ret. Lieutenant Alex Villanueva was sworn in to the office of LA County Sheriff in one of the biggest upsets of the 2018 midterm election. Latin@s and immigrant communities who refused to succumb to the politics of hate and division spewed by the Trump Administration overwhelmingly supported Villanueva as he committed to protecting immigrant communities and significantly curtailing collaboration between ICE and the LASD.

Immigrant rights groups mobilize to Defend Sanctuary at first hearing in Sessions’ lawsuit vs. CA

On June 20, the U.S. District court in Sacramento will hold the first hearing in the Trump administration’s widely-criticized lawsuit challenging parts of three pro-immigrant laws in California. Outside of the hearing, community groups from across the state will stage a vibrant rally, complete with musical performances, to celebrate immigrants’ resilience and to honor California’s values of compassion and inclusion.
