MEDIA STATEMENT - NDLON CONDEMNS SECOND ABDUCTION OF KILMAR ABREGO GARCIA

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 25 — Today in Baltimore, the Trump Administration arrested Kilmar Abrego Garcia when he appeared for a required check-in appointment with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The following is a statement from Chris Newman, Legal Director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON), counsel for Kilmar’s family:

“The Trump Administration keeps on abusing its vast power to punish an innocent man. Their vindictive persecution of Kilmar Abrego Garcia is as senseless and lawless now as it was the day they kidnapped him by mistake and sent him — in violation of a judge’s order — to a black-site prison in El Salvador. Their aim all along has been the naked display of authoritarian power.

“Thankfully, Trump and his accomplices do not get the final word. This case is far from over.

“By fighting for justice and due process, Kilmar is not only defending his own human rights and the safety of his family. He is also defending constitutional values for all of us.

“All of us who cherish the Constitution owe it to Kilmar to participate in his defense.  NDLON will continue to use every tool we have to vindicate Kilmar’s rights in the courts and in the court of public opinion.

“We will accompany Kilmar and his family every step of the way in the days ahead, as he continues to set an example for everyone who refuses to bow to fascism.  #FreeKilmar.”
