NEW JERSEY, Aug. 12 — Today we learned that ICE plans to spend $10 million to $20 million to buy electric-shock gloves for its agents who roam the streets. Electric-shock gloves. So they can force anyone they meet to collapse with pain and paralysis so it’s easier to shove them into vans and take them away.
The following is a statement from Jorge Torres, National Organizing Director for NDLON, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network. He is also founder of Resistencia en Acción NJ and a member of the ICE Out of NJ collaborative.
“We know ICE attacks innocent people through racial profiling and then lies about the innocent people it attacks. “They resisted arrest.” “They drove their car right at us.” “They had a gun.” A mountain of lies, told over and over. And over and over, court testimony and citizen videos keep exposing their lies.
“Now the Trump Administration wants to be able to quietly torture people in plain sight. The same Administration that put bullets into Renee Good’s and Alex Pretti’s heads — and lied about it. That chased Carlos Roberto Montoya to his death in California just one year ago — and lied about it. The same Administration that has forced tens of thousands of immigrants into warehouse prisons and killed dozens of them through neglect and abusive treatment.
“No! Never. It cannot be a question any more. End the violence. ICE Out of our streets, our communities, our country. Abolish ICE. There is no fixing this — there is only abolition.
“ICE is a torture agency, a secret police squad, an American Gestapo.
“This is not an exaggeration. It is the truth. ICE is an abomination, and as a people we must fight with all our power to end its brutality and violence.”
