Day Laborer Network Statement on Biden Re-Election Campaign

(Los Angeles) In response to President Biden announcing his re-election campaign for 2024, Pablo Alvarado released the following statement on behalf of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON):

“While some focus on age as Biden’s biggest re-election liability, we are more concerned about his illegible immigration policy. If Mr. Biden fails to find his voice on immigrant rights — and soon — we fear the same toxic forces that propelled Donald Trump to the White House in 2016 may prevail again. The country needs a forceful, effective President who uses the power of the White House to defeat the retrograde white nationalist xenophobes who are threatening democracy.   This can only happen if President Biden stops putting his head in the sand when it comes to immigration.  He must summon immigrants’ courage and articulate a clear vision going forward.

Trump’s unlikely ascent to the White House was made easier by President Obama’s catastrophic handling of immigration enforcement during his eight years in office. Obama sought to appease nativists as a gamble to pass legislation. The resulting criminalization of migrants and unprecedented deportations offered a permission structure for Trump to scapegoat immigrants all the way to the Oval Office.

We can’t let this happen again. And it is up to President Biden to use every tool at his disposal to reform immigration policy and prevent the xenophobes from storming their way back into Washington DC.”
