Day Laborers to Debate Future While All Await Word from 
Supreme Court Decision Whether or Not to Hear Case of Redondo Beach Day Laborers
President Trumka of the AFL-CIO and Tavis Smiley to Address Day Laborer Convention

Today will mark a historic day for day laborers as the President of the AFL-CIO and Tavis Smiley address the 6th national assembly of day laborers in Los Angeles.  2012 marks the sixth year of a historic partnership signed between the National Day Laborer Organizing Network and the AFL-CIO to jointly achieve workers’ rights and accomplish new protections for workers. In addition to the keynotes, day laborers will hold a town hall to debate the future of the migrant rights movement and culminate the day with a night of cultural performances including a concert by Los Jornaleros del Norte.

At the same time of the national assembly, the Supreme Court may decide whether or not to hear the case of Redondo Beach day laborers who have successfully sued that municipality for violation of their first amendment rights. Day laborers will be awaiting to hear the results of the Court’s decision as the determine the future direction of their efforts.

“When we defend the rights of day laborers, we defend the rights of all,” explains Pablo Alvarado, director of NDLON. “In the highest court of the nation we will protect the first amendment and expand its definition for everyone. Hundreds of humble workers have gathered in this assembly to challenge the politics of hate and put this entire country on the road to justice.”
