Los Angeles, CA – Today, California is signing into law SB-54, the California Values Act, landmark legislation designed to protect immigrants from deportation by prohibiting cooperation between local police and immigration agents. The California Values act is currently the strongest and most comprehensive statewide policy in the country to protect against deportations and is expected to set a precedent for similar types of legislation in localities across the nation.
Pablo Alvarado, Executive Director of NDLON issued the following statement:
“California is a safer and stronger place when all people— regardless of where they were born— are treated equally by our schools, by our courts, and by our criminal justice system. SB 54 is proof that local leadership is necessary, and progress is possible, despite the politics of fear, hatred, and division that have paralyzed the nation’s capitol. California lawmakers draw strength and courage from immigrants, and ironically President Trump’s racist scapegoating has inspired an emerging consensus about the need for even greater protections for those who are most vulnerable.”
