Stephen Miller Fails Upward as Trump’s New Chief of Staff
Los Angeles, CA – The following is a statement from Erika Andiola, Political Director of NDLON, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network:
“A frightened, pathetic President today named a frightened, pathetic man, Stephen Miller, to be his White House Chief of Staff.
“Donald Trump, who long ago ran out of ideas, now is clearly running out of options. His ship hit an iceberg in Tuesday’s election. The sinking has begun. Americans are disgusted with him and the MAGA disaster. For the narcissist-in-chief, the next two years are looking to add epic amounts of misery on top of failure. Miller, whose obsession with hating immigrants helped to put the Administration on its path to self-destruction, might have been the only person willing to take the job.
“Everything else Trump has tried — taming inflation, winning wars, creating jobs, leading the free world — has led to failure. So now he’s back to where he started in his first Presidential run in 2015. He has nothing to offer the American people but bigotry. He’s running on fumes — the rank odor of anti-immigrant hatred and White supremacy.
“Trump and Miller still have billions of dollars and the vast machinery of arrest, imprisonment and deportation. But their project of terrorizing immigrants has already failed. The people are not afraid. Even in the places brutalized by the worst of ICE’s murderous assaults, in Minnesota, L.A., Houston, the people have stood up and said: No. No more. No más.
“No one should fear such a fear-obsessed man. Even as a DACA recipient, I didn’t fear Miller. I dont fear him now because I know he’s in the wrong side of history. Nobody should. We have law, morality, and most important, the people on our side. In the years ahead, our victories will grow, along with our power.
“So Democrats, listen up. Use all your power to defy the White House and Miller. Block them at every turn. Cut off their funding. Fight harder. Win more. As Senator-elect Peggy Flanagan of Minnesota memorably said on Election Night: Tear ICE apart.
“Follow the courageous example of fellow immigrants like Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the former day laborer from Baltimore who had the full weight of the U.S. and Salvadoran governments trying to crush him. Kilmar survived a dark prison in El Salvador. He endured and is not afraid.
“Follow the example of Pedro Vasquez-Perdomo, who with other immigrant workers stood up to the random brutality of ICE’s racial profiling assaults in southern California, and took the Administration to court.
“Our community knows courage. We know how to stand up without fear. Miller and Trump do not. We know the new Chief of Staff will still be loud and dangerous, but he will be ineffective where it counts. He will keep spewing lies but not solutions. Like his boss, Stephen Miller’s got nothing.”
