NDLON Statement on Stunning Proposal within ICE to Break the Agency Apart

Los Angeles, CA – On Thursday, 20 regional supervisors from ICE’s top investigations unit, Homeland Security Investigators (HIS) issued a letter to Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen seeking to break apart from the agency.

In response, Salvador Sarmiento, Director of Campaigns at NDLON issued the following statement:

“We’ve known for a long time that ICE is a rogue law enforcement agency, but this letter shows there is now a rogue agency within a rogue agency. For years, ICE has been inventing threats and defining its own mission without oversight from Congress or the White House. It’s a problem that preceded the current administration, and Obama alums would do the country a service by acknowledging this fact.

“We are now entering a new phase where ICE, on a daily basis, is demonstrating the need for its own abolition. As long as Trump is in the White House, and Congress is held hostage by white nationalists, the calls on the streets to #AbolishICE will continue to grow louder, and pressure on local politicians will grow to enact policies at the local level to kick ICE out of our states, our counties, and our communities.”
