(WASHINGTON)— In the wake of the Supreme Court decision on Arizona v. United States, state and local lawmakers will join with law enforcement and faith leaders in a telephonic conference to promote local alternatives to Arizona-style laws that can restore trust in law enforcement among immigrant communities. They will also call on the Department of Homeland Security to terminate the controversial Se Communities program, to ensure that federal immigration enforcement will not undermine public safety.

Days after the California senate passed an “anti-Arizona” bill called the TRUST act, and on the day the Washington DC council is set to enact similar legislation, the telephonic conference forms part of a National Week of Action featuring over a dozen local events across the country addressing the impact of the Se Communities program on public safety and families.

The diverse panel will provide useful insight about the utility of laws such as the California TRUST Act and enacted policies in Chicago and elsewhere in combating the unfair burden that the Se Communities program places on local governments.

Leaders are calling upon local elected officials to take their own initiative to turn the tide against the broken immigration and detention system by enacting local policies that draw a bright line between local police and civil immigration enforcement.

They will also announce the launch of the website www.restoringtrusttogether.org as a resource for faith leaders, local elected leaders, law enforcement leaders, and other concerned stakeholders.
