“DHS has dishonestly stoked fear of immigrants to advance a dangerous Arizona-styledeportation program that imperils our community safety. The WBEZ report will likely intensify scrutiny of DHS’s misrepresentations, and it will certainly amplify calls for a suspension of Se Communities. But the report also puts the President squarely in the middle of a battle between his Justice Department and his Homeland Security Department. While the DOJ initiated legal action to a calamity in Secretary Napolitano’s hometown, President Obama’s hometown provides a blueprint for real immigration reform. The only mystery remaining about Se Communities at this point is why the President has not yet reversed course.”
Similar to Cook County, California Asm. Ammiano formally introduced protections against the dragnet deportation program in a bill, the TRUST Act to set minimum standards in the state.
