In reaction to President’s speech on immigration tonight at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Gala, Pablo Alvarado issued the following statement:

“The President correctly noted that people want to know ‘where [his] heart is’ on immigration, and his reaction to the courageous shouts of Blanca Hernandez, summed things up perfectly.  The President said, ‘listen to what i’m going to say.  I’m going to get to that. I’m going to get to it.’    We have been hearing that rhetoric for six years as the President has unnecessarily destroyed immigrant workers’ families and repeatedly delayed use of his existing legal authority, all in pursuit of a failed legislative strategy.

We believe strongly the President is getting bad legal and political .  He must reverse course immediately to close the widening gap between his rhetoric and his policies that threatens his legacy as President.  Simply put, the President’s credibility is on the line.  We fully expect that he will improve upon, rather than undermine, the legalization standard set in the Senate bill, and we continue to demand the voices of those who are most impacted by his brutal policy to have an audience with him. And above all, we call upon the President to use his authority before, not after, the election. “
