Los Angeles, June 8—Last month, the Republicans who control the House Oversight Committee created a task force dedicated to “defending constitutional rights” and exposing “radical ideologies.”
The task force chairman, Brandon Gill of Texas, has called a hearing for Tuesday, June 9, on immigration “chaos” and policy “abuse.”
Among the “radical” horrors the new force is tasked with fighting are Medicaid, the vital federal-state program that provides health care for millions of poor and disabled Americans; initiatives promoting diversity, equity and inclusion; and long-established humanitarian programs like Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which has given safe haven in the U.S. to immigrants from dangerous, war-torn and disaster-stricken countries since the 1990’s.
Presumably Gill and his fellow Republicans will use the hearing to attack TPS, among other things.
Chris Newman is an NDLON lawyer with more than two decades’ experience in defending day laborers’ constitutional rights. NDLON works with day laborers, migrants and low-wage workers to expand labor, civil, and political rights for all. As part of that work, NDLON supports the National TPS Alliance, a member-led organization whose mission is to defend the TPS program and win permanent residency for TPS holders.
Other witnesses at the hearing include the nativist gadfly Mark Krikorian of the Center for Immigration Studies and Matt O’Brien of the Federation for American Immigration Reform. CIS and FAIR have deep historical ties to the anti-immigrant extremism that used to lurk on the fringes of American politics. Both organizations have enjoyed new prominence in Washington since the MAGA takeover of the Republican Party and the adoption of Donald Trump’s gutter racism as the defining force in his Administration’s immigration policymaking and enforcement.
