LOS ANGELES, April 17 –  The National Day Laborer Organizing Network calls on all members of the Washington press corps to help uncover the truth about Kilmar Abrego-Garcia.

The White House is using its powerful platform to say things about a private individual who cannot speak for himself, because he is locked away in a foreign prison with no access to his family or a lawyer.

The following is a statement from Pablo Alvarado, NDLON’s Co-Executive Director:

“As journalists in Washington, you have access to those who know the truth about Kilmar Abrego-Garcia. You can directly seek answers. Instead of amplifying deceptions, won’t you help Kilmar’s family by pursuing the answers to these five questions?

1. Is Kilmar alive and safe?

2. Why can’t he speak with his wife, children and mother? He has been away from his family for more than a month, they are desperate to hear his voice and to know that he is alive. Why should they be denied that basic comfort and consolation?

3. What are the terms and conditions of his imprisonment? The United States is not forcing President Nayib Bukele to hold Kilmar. As with other prisoners in CECOT, there must be an agreement, a deal – why can’t Kilmar’s family or the American people know what it is?

4. Why can’t he speak with a lawyer?

5. Why won’t you show your evidence about Kilmar Abrego-Garcia? Kilmar is locked away for no apparent reason. There has never been a proceeding, a hearing, a charge or a conviction in his case. Even mass murderers and terrorists like Timothy McVeigh are given the right of due process in a court of law. Why not Kilmar – not to mention the potentially hundreds, if not thousands, of other men in CECOT who have no criminal records?
