NDLON THANKS REP. ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ FOR DEFENDING THE CONSTITUTION
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 18 – U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York is bravely taking heat from the Trump Administration for informing immigrants of their Constitutional rights. On her website and with a Facebook webinar, published flyers and through her office, she is working to make sure that immigrants know what to do if they are confronted by immigration agents. Trump officials are threatening to have her investigated for this legal – and vital – constituent service, but AOC is standing firm.
The following is a statement from Nadia Marin-Molina, Co-Executive Director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON):
“Know-your-rights education is absolutely critical for immigrants – especially but not only those who are undocumented – to protect themselves against unlawful intimidation, interrogation and arrest by ICE agents and others acting on ICE’s behalf.
“People need to know they don’t have to open the door to agents who don’t have a warrant signed by a judge. They don’t have to talk, share personal information, sign any papers or hand over personal documents. And they can speak with a lawyer. People can go to conocetusderechos.org to learn more and share this vital information.
“Trump and his Administration have shown that they are happy to bend, break and ignore the law to get what they want. We’re grateful that at least one member of Congress has read and understands the Constitution and is telling MAGA what to do with its lawless reading of our bedrock Constitutional rights.
“Among lawmakers on this issue, AOC is standing pretty much alone. But NDLON stands with her, and so should everyone who respects the Constitution as the law of the land. Thank you, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez.”
