LOS ANGELES, Jan. 22 — The following is a statement from Nadia Marin-Molina and Pablo Alvarado, Co-Executive Directors of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON):
“History gave the members of Congress one test on Thursday. One simple test.
“One test — they flunked.
“One decision — they got it wrong.
“The question was — here are millions of innocent human beings who are being brutalized by a rough, racist, and increasingly lawless White House. Assaulted, locked up, dying during detention, some clearly killed by allegedly masked federal agents.
“Nothing and no one in government is stopping this Administration. And here it has its hands out for billions more dollars to keep on going.
“Do you give it to them?
“For all but one House Republican, the answer was what it always is: Yes, Dear Leader. Yes, Mr. Trump. Whatever you want. Yes. They voted twice for a spending bill that lavishly funds ICE, the closest thing to a secret police with no legal parameters this country has seen in generations.
“But seven Democrats failed the test, too. Seven profiles in cowardice, shame. Seven members of what is supposed to be an opposition party. These are the shameful seven: Henry Cuellar and Vicente Gonzalez of Texas, Jared Golden of Maine, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, Don Davis of North Carolina, and Laura Gillen and Tom Suozzi, both of New York.
“To them we say: Shame on you. So many immigrants and citizens and people of goodwill are taking risks every day to oppose authoritarianism. In this struggle, in this calamity, we desperately need heroes. Time will tell you that you were not on the right side of history.
“To the Democrats that voted no, we thank you. Thomas Massie of Kentucky was the only Republican to vote no. We thank him too.
“To the others, we say: Shame on you.”
