Immigration and Custom Enforcement officials handcuffed and took away Jose Maria Islas Monday after he lost his appeal and was ordered deported to Mexico. Islas was taken to a deportation center in Massachusetts, said activist Megan Fountain of Unidad Latina en Accion. More than 800 people had signed a petition asking that ICE grant his stay of removal request with his attorney, Danielle Briand, arguing that he would meet the criteria to remain here and become a citizen under the immigration reform proposal before Congress. “It’s really upsetting,” Fountain said. Islas has been here since 2005, staying with his sister and brother, while sending money back to his family in Mexico.
