Day Laborer Organizations Share Reaction to Historic $2.1 Billion Fund for Undocumented and Excluded Workers in NY

New York, NY — After a year long campaign led by undocumented and excluded workers, New York State has approved a budget that includes $2.1 billion for an Excluded Worker Fund. It is an enormous step against the racist exclusion of immigrant workers and their families from COVID relief, and a victory made possible by the sacrifice and struggle of migrant workers, day laborer centers, and many more.

The implementation of the fund will be crucial, and the organizations such as day labor centers, that fought so hard for this fund, will now play a crucial role in ensuring that workers are actually able to access it.

Still, the fund will include restrictive requirements that will be barriers for many workers who need to access it the most, and have the least forms of traditional proof of income, such as pay stubs and bank accounts.

Today, we celebrate with our beautiful coalition partners. Tomorrow, we keep organizing, because we know, solo el pueblo salva al pueblo.

“Our immigrant community celebrates for the first time that the voices of essential and excluded workers were heard and taken into account for economic relief. There had to be a global pandemic and hunger strike for them to be taken into account during this immense crisis. “Today, our undocumented immigrant workers in NY celebrate a victory! For the first time, their voices have been heard and their work has been recognized. The Community Resource Center joined the Fund For Excluded Workers Coalition to fight for the justice our essential immigrant workers deserve, and collectively we won! New York, NY — Después de una campaña de 12 meses liderada por trabajadores indocumentados y excluidos, el Estado de New York ha aprobado un presupuesto que incluye $2.1 Mil millones para un Fondo de Trabajadores Excluidos. Es un paso enorme en contra de la exclusión racista de familias trabajadoras inmigrantes – hecho posible por el sacrificio y lucha de líderes migrantes y trabajadores, centros de jornaleras y jornaleros, y muchos más.

La implementación del fondo será crucial, y las organizaciones como los centros de jornaleros que han luchado tanto por este fondo ahora desempeñarán un papel crucial en asegurar que los trabajadores realmente lo puedan accesar.
