NDLON Launches Chant Down the Walls Concert Series

Los Angeles, CA – Today, Monday October 13, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network is launching Chant Down the Walls, a free concert series that will take place in front of the Metropolitan Detention Center every Monday for the next several weeks, with a performance by Chilean MC and activist Ana Tijoux and Los Jornaleros del Norte.

The idea behind Chant Down the Walls came up when 200 day laborers from around the country joined LA residents in a march from Placita Olvera to the Metropolitan Detention Center in late August. When the march reached the corner of Alameda and Aliso, the sound of people pounding on their windows inside prompted the marchers to look up and be confronted with the faces of those inside, their held up messages scrawled on toilet papers, and their raised their fists as the marchers outside chanted, “No están solos/You are not alone.”

For the next several weeks, we will return every Monday evening to amplify that message with musicians who will hold a concert for the detainees with songs that will penetrate the detention center walls. We’ll rally to say ICE Out of LA and get our loved ones out of the jails.
