Los Angeles, CA — With another victory this week in the California Legislature, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) reiterated its calls for Home Depot to “do something” about the raids happening at its stores. The legislation comes at a time when Trump is once again demanding more and more arrests, targeting homes, worksite
On Tuesday, June 23, the REPAIR Act (SB1103, Sen. Perez) passed the state Assembly’s Judiciary committee by a vote of 7 to 3. The very next week, the bill also passed the Assembly Privacy Committee. This landmark legislation, known as the “ICE Out Of Home Depot” bill, would ensure that Home Depot and other big-box home improvement stores share with the community what they know about federal raids taking place on their property.
Authored by California Senator Sasha Renée Pérez and sponsored by NDLON, the bill responds to growing concern over the often chaotic raids targeting day laborers and customers at Home Depot stores. The legislation is a response to those raids and to these stores’ silence as Donald Trump and Stephen Miller made Home Depot a central target to ramp up arrests and make a show of force nationwide.
“Trump is sending federal police – militarized, masked, and wholly untrained – to home improvement store parking lots to ramp up arrests, stoke fear and make a crude show of force,” said S.G. Sarmiento, staff attorney for NDLON. “They’ve committed unlawful arrests, brutalized customers, day laborers, and neighbors, and made a regular practice of racial profiling. Home Depot has said nothing.”
The bill passed the Senate in late May and is now moving through the California state Assembly.
“Folks are showing up for their neighbors,” added Sarmiento. “Local officials have also shown up. We are asking state lawmakers to show up. Because we need Home Depot to do something. Doing nothing is not an option.”
On June 25, 26 Members of the U.S. House, led by Rep. Judy Chu, sent a letter to Home Depot and Lowe’s asking the companies to answer questions about the raids. To date, over 3,000 people have signed a petition asking Home Depot to do the right thing.
