Human Rights Advocate and Immigrant Organizer Arrested by Trenton Police
TRENTON, Aug. 20 — Trenton police today arrested Asma Elhuni, a human-rights advocate and immigration-rights organizer who is also a leading member of the coalition of grassroots organizations resisting the presence of ICE in New Jersey.
ICE was patrolling our neighborhoods and detaining our community members and organizers when Asma was arrested. Her arrest is part of the ongoing terrorizing of our communities by ICE agents working with local police.
WHAT: Emergency Rally to denounce Trenton Police collaboration with ICE and to defend advocates
WHO: ICE OUT of NJ collective, Resistencia en Acción NJ,
WHEN: TODAY, AUG. 20 at 6 p.m.
WHERE: Trenton City Hall, 319 East State Street. Trenton, NJ
The following is a statement from Jorge Torres of NDLON, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network:
“Today we meet to defend our sister Asma Elhuni and to denounce the collaboration of Trenton law enforcement with the Trump Administration’s racist, violent, anti-immigrant campaign. Safety officers must keep us safe – not harass and arrest us when we are struggling to get ICE OUT.
“Our state and cities must not be complicit in the violence and cruelty carried out by ICE and its collaborators. Now, more than ever, solidarity is essential. The people need to protect each other. I ask everyone of good conscience: Please come to City Hall in Trenton tonight. Only the people save the people. Solo el pueblo salva al pueblo.
“The police–ICE collaboration must stop. We fought for an ordinance to protect our community, and we will not stand by while our people—and those protecting them—are targeted. We demand accountability. We demand justice.”- Rev. Erich Kussman
