Day Laborer Network Statement on OSHA Walkaround Rule

New York, NY – Today, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued its final Walkaround Rule, providing all workers with an opportunity to choose a co-worker or a representative from a worker center to accompany OSHA inspectors during an investigation. In response, Debora Gonzalez, NDLON’s Senior National Safety and Health Coordinator, made the following statement:

“For day laborers and other migrant workers who are risking their lives in dangerous jobs and facing employer threats and abuse, this rule provides a key opportunity for us to better fight for our right to a safe and healthy workplace. Today OSHA is recognizing what we all know: successful labor enforcement comes “desde abajo” or from below, with the leadership and participation of workers who know their workplaces best and their organizations.”

New York, NY – Hoy la agencia federal OSHA (la Administración de Salud y Seguridad Ocupacional) emitió una regla final que provee a todos los trabajadores la oportunidad de escoger un compañero de trabajo o un representante de un centro laboral para acompañar a los inspectores de OSHA durante una investigación. En respuesta, Debora Gonzalez, Coordinadora Nacional de Salud y Seguridad de la Red Nacional Jornalera (NDLON), proveyó la siguiente declaración:

“Para los jornaleros y los demás trabajadores migrantes que están arriesgando la vida en trabajos peligrosos y enfrentando abuso y amenazas de los empleadores, esta regla provee una oportunidad clave para que luchemos por nuestro derecho a un lugar de trabajo saludable y seguro. Hoy OSHA está reconociendo lo que todos sabemos: el enforzamiento de la ley laboral viene desde abajo, con el liderazgo y participación de trabajadores quienes conocen mejor su lugar de trabajo, y con sus organizaciones.”
