It comes the same day that former California Supreme Court Justice and civil rights champion Cruz Reynoso published an op-ed in the Sacramento Bee:
The current version of the TRUST Act – Assembly Bill 4 – would restore balance to unreasonable immigration “holds” in local jails that have wasted local resources, hurt families and sabotaged trust between law enforcement and immigrant communities.
From the time of Solomon up to the present day, balance – the art of finding an equitable middle ground – has been a central principle of justice.
To uphold that principle, I believe that Gov. Jerry Brown needs to champion the current version of the TRUST Act – Assembly Bill 4 – and resist misguided efforts by some to gut the bill.
Pablo Alvarado, Executive Director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, applauded the City Council resolution, saying, “The statewide consensus in support of the TRUST Act is building an unstoppable momentum. Nearly 100,000 Californians have been deported since the “Se Communities” deportation program was implemented. People now fear the police because of the role police have been forced to play in service of immigration agents. But California can lead the way in restoring trust. Governor Brown must sign the TRUST Act into law as soon as it gets to his desk.”
