WORKERS’ CONCERT TO HONOR VOLUNTEERS WHO STEPPED UP FOR L.A. FIRE RELIEF

PASADENA, Feb. 26 – The National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) is inviting thousands of volunteers who helped during the Eaton Fire disaster to come back to the Pasadena Community Job Center on Saturday, March 1, for a day of music, solidarity and gratitude.

And for all the reporters, TV and radio crews, bloggers and social-media influencers who lifted up this powerful and uplifting immigrant story — you are invited, too! We are grateful for your work and want to you to come and catch up. Please come to see how our relief effort is ongoing and meet the wonderful people who are making it happen.

The daylong concert at the Center, 500 N. Lake Avenue, will bring musicians and Center members, neighbors and friends together to recognize the huge outpouring of support after wildfires devastated Pasadena and Altadena in January. Musicians will include the NDLON band, Los Jornaleros del Norte, known as the “house band for the immigrant rights and labor movement” in Los Angeles,  the norteño band Los Cadetes de Linares, and Yahritza y Su Esencia, from Washington State.

The following statement is from Pablo Alvarado, NDLON’s Co-Executive Director:

“From the first hours and days after the fires began on Jan. 7, good people came forward to help those who were displaced and traumatized. They didn’t ask for anything, they just asked how they could help.

“Tens of thousands of people came to the Job Center in the weeks the fires raged. Even those who had lost their own homes and property joined the effort. They poured their hearts into helping. They hauled water and food, sorted clothing and emergency supplies. Fire-relief brigades went into the neighborhoods to remove fallen trees and fire debris. They worked endlessly and showed the City of Pasadena, and California and the world, what love and solidarity can do in a time of disaster.

“The volunteers gave so much of themselves to help others. Now we would like to give back to them.”
