NDLON Reaction to California Fund for All Immigrant Workers

Los Angeles, CA – In response to California Governor Newsom’s announcement of $125 million for immigrant workers, NDLON Co-Director Pablo Alvarado made the following statement:

“Today’s announcement is a necessary first step to close the widening gap between immigrants and vital assistance that could mean the difference between life and death for millions of Californians. The abject failure of Congress and the sinister policies of the Trump Administration have created a domestic human rights crisis with disproportionate impact on California. As a consequence, California lawmakers have a legal responsibility and moral obligation to respond accordingly.

“Our hope is that the actions taken by Governor Newsom today will catalyze public and private partnerships to encourage additional measures to ensure that all people in California – regardless of immigration status – receive equal protection under the law. On behalf of our member organizations throughout the state, we pledge to do our part to make this happen.”

Background:

On Tuesday, a caravan of over 200 cars, led by Los Angeles area day laborers, encircled the state building in Los Angeles, calling for Governor Gavin Newsom to take immediate action. The “Caravan of Essential and Excluded Workers included day laborers, domestic workers, restaurant, and other low wage industries.
Millions of immigrant workers have been excluded by the federal stimulus bill signed by Donald Trump two weeks ago. Meanwhile, the Trump administration continues a policy of deterrence seeking to terrorize immigrant families into voluntarily leaving the U.S.
