La Cumbia de la Migra
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 15 — Don’t cry – sing! Don’t hide – dance! Don’t walk – run to your music player today.
On this day, users on all streaming-music platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Google Play, and YouTube Music, will be able to hear the new studio release from the greatest day-laborer band in the history of day-laborer bands, Los Jornaleros del Norte, which for more than 25 years has been the house band for the immigrant-rights movement in the greater Los Angeles area and beyond.
The musicians of Los Jornaleros del Norte are also members of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON), which advocates for immigrant day laborers and other low-wage workers. For a quarter-century, NDLON has incorporated music and art into its grassroots organizing and power-building.
Amid a wave of racial persecution and the criminalization of those who work the hardest and earn the least, Los Jornaleros del Norte have turned their guitars into peaceful weapons. They don’t fire bullets—they fire truths.
We immigrants have long been known as those who sing, dance and laugh in the face of brutal repression. We refuse to be terrorized and we will never be silenced.
“La Cumbia de la Migra” continues Los Jornaleros’ long tradition of speaking truth in the face of power.
Dark times make for powerful messages. The song, written by Omar Leon, pours the immigrant community’s deepest feelings of grief and anger of recent months into its stinging words. Check it out on Spotify here, and watch the video on YouTube here.
Esa migra desgraciada
Que se vaya a la chingada
Que se vaya a la chingada
Esa migra desgraciada
When the jornaleros say “Solo el pueblo salva al pueblo” (Only the people save the people), this is what they mean.
