Interfaith and Community Leaders Convene a Posada To Seek Protection For Immigrants

Los Angeles, CA- On Thursday evening, Interfaith leaders from across Los Angeles will convene an interfaith posada, to walk together in prayer and solidarity across faith traditions, and stand against attempts to target, vilify and criminalize members of our immigrant family.

Leaders of various faiths recently gathered to publicly announce their commitment to provide sanctuary for immigrants and will now convene a posada to urge other political, community and faith leaders to join in the effort. “As people of faith and conscience, we stand together and proclaim that Los Angeles will be a place of sanctuary for all” said Reverend Francisco Garcia. WHO:  Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice (CLUE), the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, and the National Day Labor Organizing Network (NLDON), The Central American Resource Center (CARECEN), Jovenes, Inc., the Latino/Latina Roundtable, the Southwest California Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), and others.

Traditionally “La Posada” commemorates the journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem and their search for shelter in preparation for Jesus’ birth. This year, on Thursday December 22 — in the shadow of looming public policy decisions by the incoming presidential administration — “La Posada” becomes a symbolic representation of the search for protection for immigrants and refugees targeted for oppression and marginalization. We will walk by several local and federal government, law and immigration enforcement locations that have direct impact on the well being of immigrant and refugee families, calling upon these entities to not cooperate with the intended policies of the new administration.

Many faith traditions look to God for refuge and sanctuary, and call upon followers to practice the Golden Rule, to welcome the refugee, the stranger in our midst. We will stand together to demand that all immigrants, and all people, regardless of convictions and background, be protected by the city and county of Los Angeles.
