Groundbreaking Report Contradicts Homeland Security Departments' Claims About Jail Deportation Program

NDLON Calls on Sec. Napolitano to Stop Fearmongering

and Start Addressing Civil Rights Crisis in DHS Immigration Policy

Chicago, IL. 05.16.2012.

Yesterday, WBEZ released a report on recidivism of individuals released under Cook County's progressive immigration detainer policy, passed in response to dragnet federal immigration programs. The study "finds no evidence that inmates freed from jail against the wishes of immigration authorities reoffend or jump bail more than other freed inmates do."  In response, Pablo Alvarado of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network issued the following statement:

"DHS has dishonestly stoked fear of immigrants to advance a dangerous Arizona-styledeportation program that imperils our community safety.  The WBEZ report will likely intensify scrutiny of DHS's misrepresentations, and it will certainly amplify calls for a suspension of Secure Communities.   But the report also puts the President squarely in the middle of a battle between his Justice Department and his Homeland Security Department.  While the DOJ initiated legal action to remedy a calamity in Secretary Napolitano's hometown, President Obama's hometown provides a blueprint for real immigration reform.  The only mystery remaining about Secure Communities at this point is why the President has not yet reversed course."

Similar to Cook County, California Asm. Ammiano formally introduced protections against the dragnet deportation program in a bill, the TRUST Act to set minimum standards in the state.
